Wanna learn how to write a great song? Spend some time listening to the amazing catalog of material that Diane has composed.
I met her in the early '90s, when I rented a studio/office on Diane's floor at 6464 Sunset. We hit it off, I loved her self-deprecating sense of humor. In the process, I made friends with a number of talented people- Kris Khellow (producer), Mario Luccy (engineer), Chuck Cymone (producer), & the man who had a room next to mine- Jimi Randolph. Jimi has done it all with me- engineer, compose, play multiple instruments, & produce.
Di has a large toolbox of ideas when she writes- great hooks, interesting time changes, lyrics that take you places etc..
She's laser-focused when she writes- nothing else matters. It's a great lesson in songwriting for all writers.
She also let me co-produce songs for some of the artists she placed songs with. We both worked late hours often, so we'd end up hanging out sometimes. She loves raunchy jokes (which I sometimes supplied her with). One night she came across the hall with time to kill & I got an idea. I asked if she would like to check out a funny romantic movie, & she agreed. The tape I put in instead was "Full Metal Jacket" (a Viet Nam movie about the Marines). The opening shows a brutal (& profanely funny) drill sergeant the first day with new recruits.. She laughed her ass off.

In 1998 I arranged strings on some of her material from
Whitney Houston's "My Love is Your Love" album. After the record was released, Di called me to tell me that Clive Davis liked my string arranging work on "I Bow Out" & the other material ...which I really appreciated.
Eventually, I moved into a beautiful studio (that I sub-let from composer John Ottman), but we still keep in touch. She recently texted me & said she saw "Full Metal Jacket again & thought of me 🙂. I'm supposed to work with her & Mario again sometime this year.

Finally, I was very happy for Di when it was announced that she will receive an honorary Oscar later this year. She had been nominated 13 times & sadly never won. In keeping with her humor, I texted this to Diane a few weeks ago-
Congrats Susan Lucci.. I mean Lady Di 🙂
Your Oscar is well deserved & long overdue. Mario is in touch, & I look forward to seeing & working with you both again.
Hugs (If you test negative),
